What to Wear Mountain Biking in Spring (Women’s Guide)

Spring is hands down one of my favourite times to ride.

The trails start to dry out, the days get longer, and you finally don’t feel like you’re battling the weather quite as much as winter. But… figuring out what to wear mountain biking in spring in the UK is still a bit of a guessing game.

One minute you’re freezing at the start, the next you’re overheating halfway up the first climb.

Over time, I’ve found a simple approach to spring MTB clothing for women that works for those in-between conditions without overthinking it.

My Go-To Spring MTB Outfit

If I keep it simple, my go-to women’s MTB outfit for spring is:

  • a lightweight ladies MTB jersey
  • MTB shorts or trousers depending on conditions
  • a packable outer layer
  • gloves and good socks

That combination covers pretty much everything spring throws at you without needing to overthink it.

Emily’s Current Picks

If you’re building your own spring MTB outfit, these are the pieces I reach for most:

  • Monochrome Dash Print Jersey → breathable, quick-drying and easy to layer
  • MTB trousers → depending on how muddy the trails are
  • Trail Bloom socks → slightly thicker sole for comfort on longer rides

Start With a Good Ladies MTB Jersey

For me, everything starts with a ladies MTB jersey.

In spring, I usually go for something lightweight but with a bit of coverage — often a long sleeve or a breathable 3/4 sleeve. It gives you that balance of warmth in the morning but doesn’t feel heavy once you get moving.

A good women’s mountain bike jersey should:

  • wick sweat away on climbs
  • dry quickly if the weather turns
  • feel light and comfortable all ride

It’s the one piece you’ll wear every time, so it’s worth getting right.

Layering Is Key for Spring Riding

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about what to wear mountain biking, it’s that layering makes everything easier.

Spring riding in the UK can change quickly, so I always take an extra layer — something lightweight that I can throw on if needed.

I tend to think:

  • start slightly cool (you’ll warm up quickly)
  • bring a layer you can actually ride in
  • make sure it packs down small if you don’t need it

This is what makes a good spring MTB clothing setup for UK riding — flexibility without bulk.

Shorts or Trousers?

This always depends on the trails.

If it’s dry, I’ll usually go for women’s MTB shorts. But if it’s still muddy (which, let’s be honest, it often is in spring), I’ll reach for women’s MTB trousers.

Trousers are great for:

  • wet or muddy trails
  • cooler mornings
  • a bit of extra protection

Don’t Forget the Small Extras

It’s usually the little things that make the biggest difference on a ride.

In spring, I’ll often add:

  • gloves for grip and warmth
  • slightly thicker socks
  • a cap or buff if it’s windy

Expect to Get It Slightly Wrong

The reality of spring mountain biking in the UK is that you won’t always get it right.

Some rides you’ll be too warm, others you’ll wish you’d brought another layer.

But once you find a simple go-to women’s MTB outfit, it takes the stress out of getting ready.

The Main Thing

For me, the most important thing is feeling comfortable on the bike.

When your women’s MTB clothing fits properly and works with you, you stop thinking about it — and just enjoy the ride.

And after a long winter, that first proper spring ride feeling is hard to beat.
